Pavane pour une Infante Défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) is a well-known piece written for solo piano by the French composer Maurice Ravel.
He wrote it in 1899 when he was studying composition at the Conservatoire de Paris under Gabriel Fauré. Ravel described the piece as "an evocation of a pavane that a little princess [infanta] might, in former times, have danced at the Spanish court”. The piece is not meant to pay tribute to any particular princess from history, but rather expresses a nostalgic enthusiasm for Spanish customs and sensibilities.
This marimba arrangement attempts to retain as much from the piano solo as possible while being compressed into a five minute, contest-worthy solo. Chords with five or more notes needed to be converted to four notes or less to make them possible to perform on a marimba with four mallets.
Ravel was known to be very critical of his and other’s pieces and playing. The performer of this solo should be encouraged to imagine what Ravel would say if he heard his Pavane performed on marimba. Would he respect a marimba arrangement?
Written for 4-mallets. Versions for both 4.3 and 5-octave marimba are included! 5-octave is in the original key of G Major, while 4.3-octave has been transposed to F Major. Need a different arrangement? See here.
